A Beginner’s Guide to Ayurveda

Ayurveda is an ancient holistic healing system—it’s actually one of the world’s oldest. Traces of Ayurvedic practices can be found as far back as 5,000 years ago, originating in India. But what exactly is it? The term Ayurveda comes from Sanskrit—”Ayur” meaning life, and “Veda” meaning science. It’s quite literally the science of life, based on the idea that the mind and body are inextricably linked, and that a number of preventative and remedial practices can lead to a healthy, wholesome life.

Basic Principles

Ayurveda was developed as a system with tools to support a full, healthy life. These tools include nutrition, meditation, and herbal remedies. Its core philosophy is based on the power of prevention, so instead of going to a practitioner with a problem and receiving medication, you would receive a holistic outline that includes tools to improve your condition in mind, body, and spirit. Crucial to Ayurvedic living is the maintenance of balance. It can be achieved through Ayurvedic science, and, it’s more widely known sister science, yoga—you’ve heard of it, right?

The Three Doshas

One of the foundational tools of Ayurveda is understanding the laws of nature which are linked to the human body. In Ayurvedic philosophy, nature is categorized by its elements as fire, water, earth, and air. Every substance—humans included—contains all of the elements, though some are stronger than others and every individual substance is unique. These elements, combined with a set of 20 qualities, make up an individual’s “Dosha” or energies known as the bodily humors.

Okay, so think of Doshas like a categorization of your energy type, and based on what you are (which can be more than one!), your diet, lifestyle, and healthcare are catered to your type. The three Doshas are Vata, Pitta and Kapha, each with specific qualities and properties. We’ve created formulas that Vitalize, Balance, and Align, each corresponding to these Doshas and their unique needs, respectively.
